The 2012 Championships see a number of changes from recent years, with a team time-trial, last staged as a World Championship event in 1994, scheduled to take place on Sunday 16 September. This will see trade teams compete in a similar manner to the Eindhoven Team Time-Trial held between 2005 and 2007.

The 48th edition of Turkey’s biggest cycling event, the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, started yesterday with a special stage in the Mediterranean resort town of Alanya.

The eight-stage, 1174-kilometer tour will end on the Anatolian side of Istanbul on April 29 with an intercontinental stage that passes over the Bosphorus Bridge.

The Presidential Tour of Turkey has something new in store for 2012 after four consecutive years of success and a lot of praises by some of the best teams and riders in the world. From 22 to 29 of April, the Turkish UCI 2.HC race will follow most of its route in the other way round compared to the previous editions. There will be an uphill finish for the first time and an even more attractive start list than usual.

"We always listen to teams and riders", noted race director Abdurrahman Açıkalın. "We do our best to put together a program that suits their wishes. For sure the 2012 Presidential Tour of Turkey will be an historical one."

Since 2008, the race kicked off from Istanbul and finished in Alanya. For several reasons, the course will take the riders from Alanya to Istanbul this time around. Istanbul is the European capital of sport in 2012.

A long team of 19 has been named but the men’s track endurance squad will be trimmed by one before the final team of 18 arrives in Melbourne.

  The 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships are the most prestigious track cycling event that Melbourne can host. The event has special significance on the international track cycling calendar being the final qualifying event in the lead-up to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
